Four of Pentacles
Pentacles · Four
- security
- holding on
- saving
- control
- stability
You are holding tight to what you have — and it is worth asking how tight is too tight. The Four of Pentacles shows a figure clutching one coin to their chest, one on their head, and two under their feet, guarding everything. This is the card of security and control: a desire for stability, saving, and keeping what you have earned. In balance, that is prudent and grounding. Out of balance, it becomes a grip so fierce that nothing can flow in or out. Enjoy your stability, but notice whether protecting it has started to close you off from generosity, risk, and growth.
The grip is loosening — for better or worse. Reversed, the Four of Pentacles can mean releasing control, opening up to generosity, or letting go of a possessive attachment to money and security. More anxiously, it can point to financial insecurity, overspending, or a fear-driven grasping that has tipped into greed. Find the healthy middle. Hold what you need with an open hand, allow resources and affection to move freely, and loosen the fist enough to let life circulate again.
Symbolism & imagery
A crowned figure clutches one coin tightly to the chest, balances another on the head, and pins two beneath the feet before a distant city — security guarded so closely it becomes confinement.
