- defensiveness
- standing your ground
- perseverance
- challenge
- conviction
Hold your position — what you have earned is worth defending. The Seven of Wands shows a figure on higher ground fending off six wands rising from below. This is the card of standing your ground: your success or your convictions are being challenged, and you are being asked to defend them. You have the advantage of the high position, but you must be willing to keep fighting for it. Stay firm in what you believe, meet the pushback with conviction, and do not let the sheer number of challengers make you doubt that you belong up there.
The defending is wearing you out. Reversed, the Seven of Wands can mean overwhelm — too many challenges at once, and the temptation to simply give up the ground you fought for. It may signal exhaustion, or a growing doubt about whether the position is worth defending at all. Pick your battles. If the cause still matters, dig in and rest as needed; if it no longer does, there is no shame in stepping down from the hill.
Symbolism & imagery
A figure on a rise wields a single staff against six others thrust up from below — the effort of holding your position when everything seems to be challenging it at once.
