The Hermit
Major Arcana · IX
- solitude
- introspection
- inner guidance
- searching
- wisdom
The answers you need are found by stepping back, not by pushing forward. The Hermit stands alone on a peak, holding a lantern that lights only the next few steps. This is the card of deliberate solitude — time taken away from the noise to reflect, to hear yourself, to search for a deeper truth. You may feel called to withdraw, to slow down, or to seek meaning rather than more activity. Trust that inner light. The wisdom you gather in the quiet is meant to guide both you and, eventually, others.
Solitude has curdled into isolation. Reversed, The Hermit can mean you have withdrawn too far — cutting off connection, mistaking loneliness for depth, or using retreat to avoid what you need to face. Alternatively, it can nudge you to come back out: the reflection has done its work, and it is time to rejoin the world. Reach for connection again, and let what you learned alone be shared.
Symbolism & imagery
A cloaked elder stands atop a snowy mountain, raising a lantern that holds a six-pointed star. He leans on a staff — the path already walked — lighting the way for whoever climbs behind him.
