Three of Swords
Swords · Three
- heartbreak
- grief
- painful truth
- sorrow
- betrayal
The pain is real, and pretending otherwise will not help. The Three of Swords shows three blades piercing a single heart beneath heavy rain and cloud — an image that needs no explanation. This is the card of heartbreak and sorrow: a betrayal, a loss, a painful truth that has cut deep. It is one of the tarot’s most honest cards, and its message is simply to let yourself grieve. Do not rush past the hurt or bury it. Naming the pain and feeling it fully is how it begins to move; the storm clouds pass, but only once the rain has fallen.
The worst of the pain is beginning to ease. Reversed, the Three of Swords marks healing after heartbreak — the swords being drawn out, forgiveness becoming possible, sorrow slowly releasing its grip. It can point to reconciliation, or to the quieter work of recovering from a wound you have carried too long. Alternatively, it can mean pain you are suppressing rather than processing. Let the heart mend at its own pace, and allow the clouds to finally clear.
